The Africa Union Heads of State Summit will be held in Kampala from 25th to 26th July 2010, under the theme “Maternal, Infant and Child Health and Development in Africa”.
Prior to this a series of civil society events will be organized by various civil society organizations among which include the East African Caravan , panel on the intersections between Gender Based Violence , HIV/AIDS and conflict, exhibitions and a Music concert. [+]
From 14th June to 1st July 2010, Isis-WICCE along with Hope Chigudu, an Organizational Development consultant, visited seven (7) of its partners which are Women Peace Groups focused on peace building in the post-conflict districts of Soroti, Kitgum, Gulu, Apac, Lira and Luwero.
These include Kitgum Women Peace Initiative (KIWEPI), Teso Women Peace Activists (TEWPA), Mothers Union of the Orthodox Church, Kole Women Peace Initiative (KOWEPI), Gulu Women for Peace Reconciliation and Resettlement (GUWOPAR), Luwero Women Development Association (LUWODA) and Lira Women’s Peace Initiative (LIWEPI)[+]
The Chairperson of the Board of the Trust Fund for Victims within the International Criminal Court (ICC) Ms Elizabeth Rehn has emphasised the importance of facilitating women to be on peace negotiating tables because they have the knowledge and capacity to champion peace, recovery and resettlement in post conflict societies.
Addressing an Isis-WICCE organised Forum on women in conflict, recovery and resettlement in Kampala that focussed on the Peace, Recovery and Development Plan, Uganda’s National Action Plan on United Nation’s Resolution 1325, 1820 and the Goma Declaration, Ms Rehn noted the importance of rebuilding human beings as a fundamental basic element for effective reconstruction of post conflict communities. The women leaders from Women’s Leadership for Peace and Security in the Greater Horn of Africa project have held deliberations on the recently concluded Sudanese general elections in view of the need to promote good practice in conflict management in the vast nation as the country prepared to hold the Referendum to determine the status of Southern Sudan following the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA). Isis-WICCE and Toto Chan Centre for Child Trauma (TCCT) have since 2008 been building the competencies of women in southern Sudan to engage and effectively take lead in peace building and post conflict transformation in Sudan. [+]
